Is IMS the Same as Acupuncture?

Acupuncture used on patient

Many patients wonder if intramuscular stimulation (IMS) and acupuncture are the same treatment. While both involve dry needling techniques, there are key differences between the two that are important to understand.

What is IMS?

Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) is a dry needling technique used by trained physiotherapists to treat chronic pain and muscle tightness. It works by targeting trigger points—tight, sensitive knots in the muscles—with thin needles.

By stimulating these muscles, IMS can:

  • Release chronic tension
  • Improve posture
  • Relieve nerve-related pain

IMS is especially useful for conditions caused by muscle shortening and nerve irritation, often related to poor posture, past injuries, or repetitive strain.

IMS vs. Acupuncture: What’s the Difference?

Although IMS and acupuncture both use fine needles, they are based on entirely different philosophies and treatment goals.

Acupuncture:

  • Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
  • Aims to balance energy (Qi) through meridians
  • Needles are typically left in place for 15-30 minutes
  • Promotes general relaxation and full-body wellness

IMS:

  • Developed from Western medicine and anatomy
  • Focuses on treating muscle dysfunction and neuropathic pain
  • Needles are inserted briefly into tight muscle bands
  • Targets specific areas of dysfunction for localized relief

While acupuncture is more holistic, IMS is highly targeted and clinical in approach.

Is IMS Right for You?

IMS is particularly effective for:

  • Chronic muscle pain
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Postural issues and alignment problems

Most patients begin noticing results by the third or fourth session. By session eight, many report significant pain relief and restored mobility. Some even find their symptoms completely resolved.

Need Help Deciding Between IMS and Acupuncture?

While both treatments have their place, the best option depends on your specific condition. Acupuncture may be ideal for overall wellness and energy flow, whereas IMS is excellent for resolving long-standing muscular and postural issues.
